On October 14, 2009, CHART Institute LLC was officially recognized by the Secretary of Health and Human Services as a Patient Safety Organization (PSO). PSOs can be described as organizations that share the goal of improving the quality and safety of health care delivery.
With this status, CHART Institute is licensed to collect patient safety data from PSO members. This allows us to create evidence-based and tested curriculums to couple with yearly simulation initiatives. In addition, it means we can fund solutions that benefit our hospitals, their communities and CHART as a whole. And while all of our member hospitals will be given these proactive initiatives, only those that choose to become PSO members will have access to the databank.
By providing both privilege and confidentiality, PSOs create a secure environment where clinicians and health care organizations can make real differences in best practices, policy and processes. This improves healthcare quality by identifying and reducing the risks and hazards associated with our industry.
We know of no commercial carrier that has funded a PSO, nor of any other PSO that funds the solutions it recommends.
